What is Histrionic Personality Disorder?

Histrionic personality disorder is a mental health disorder that is part of the family of personality disorders. The individual feels a constant need to have people pay attention to them and can only feel validation from this. This alienates those around them and makes it difficult for a person to have healthy, long-term relationships. Approximately 0.4% to 0.6% of adults have HPD, with some estimations putting the number as high as 1.8%.

How Do I Know I Need Histrionic Personality Disorder Treatment?

A person with histrionic personality disorder may suspect something is wrong but not know how to identify the problem. They may feel they are the smartest, most accomplished, and best-looking person in any room, yet sense that others do not agree with them. The individual often feels like the star of every conversation and loves to talk themselves up, but meets with resistance, particularly with people who have spent a lot of time with them.

When someone thinks they may need help, they can ask their doctor for a referral to a mental health counselor. The clinician will provide an assessment that will determine if the person has HPD and what treatment options can work for them.

Signs and Symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder

Many people in need of HPD treatment do not recognize that they may have a mental illness. This can make it difficult for them and those near them to understand what’s going on.

Common signs and symptoms of personality disorders include:

  • Moodiness
  • Wanting to appear superior to others in intellect, accomplishments, and physical appearance
  • Always in search of the spotlight
  • Trouble forming friendships and romantic relationships
  • Presenting themselves as an authority on many topics, even if they lack knowledge of them
  • Impatient during conversations where someone else is talking or is the center of attention
  • Acting impulsively
  • Flirting or acting out in sexual manners, even when not attracted to the person they are targeting

Our HPD Treatment Programs

Serenity Grove offers multiple levels of care to meet the exact needs of each person who comes to us for histrionic personality disorder treatment. Our treatment programs include:

  • Residential: The individual temporarily moves into our comfortable and homelike center and receives round-the-clock care.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): A good choice for those who have completed residential treatment or do not need it. Therapy sessions run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Sessions take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This allows people to receive valuable treatment while having room in their day to take care of other responsibilities.
  • Outpatient Program: Our lowest level of care only requires attending one or two therapy sessions per week.

How Is Histrionic Personality Disorder Treated?

When someone with histrionic personality disorder begins treatment, it works best when they participate in more than one type of therapy.

Common therapy modalities that help in the treatment of HPD include the following:

An initial assessment when a person checks into a treatment program will help inform the treatment team which types of therapy will work best for the individual’s unique needs. A combination of individual and group therapies forms the backbone of successful treatment. Additionally, many people with HPD benefit from taking antidepressant medications that help address symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
