Withdrawal Management & Detoxification Services

Tucked away on our four-acre treatment campus in Athens, GA, Serenity Grove is not only exceedingly discreet; the faciluty offers a full complement of withdrawal management services. Also known as, detox, intoxication management, or tapering, withdrawal management at Serenity Grove is able to provide a broad array of services and interventions that make the detox experince with our team among the safest and most comfortable available. For a great analogy, this philosophy is a lot like the safety message delivered by flight attendants before takeoff –– "Although we are dedicated to providing a high degree of comfort, we are primarily here for your safety."

Our physicians, mid-levels, and the entire nursing staff are experienced, and well-trained in addiction medicine practice standards as established by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Furthermore, our team consists of a Psychiatrist, two board-certified Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist(s) who are experts in airway management and critical care. With the advanced skills of this multi-disciplinary team, Serenity Grove provides the following withdrawal management services and levels of detox care:

  • Outpatient Ambulatory Withdrawal Management (“Outpatient Detox”) – Our lowest acuity detox, outpatient withdrawal management consists of daily detox check-in's to allow our team to adequately assess and manage the client's progress. After the assessment, clients who are receiving outpatient detox services are also provided couseling, education, and guidance. Afterwards, the daily medication(s), if any, that are scheduled for the time at home will be entrusted to a responsible party that our staff approves.

  • Residential Withdrawal Management – when indicated, we can provide withdrawal management services on a 24-hour staffed, residential basis. Our medical team will manage all aspects of the client's condition, prescribe appropriate treatment measures, and evaluate the response to various therapies, including but not limited to, monitoring of serial vital signs, fluid and electrolyte balance, seizure prophylaxis, maintenance of vital functions, and interventions to assist in patient comfort. Individuals struggling with going "cold turkey" or "white knuckling it" should not risk harmful, even life-threatening side effects of withdrawal or DT’s (delirium tremens). Once admitted, clients requiring residential detox enjoy the services and attention of skilled and experienced staff with licensed detox professionals available on a 24-hour basis.

  • Residential High-acuity Withdrawal Management – we provide medically managed, high-acuity inpatient withdrawal management to assist moderate to severely ill clients with complex co-occurring conditions and to facilitate detoxification with the highest degree of safety and comfort measures to prevent or reduce exacerbation of complex dual-diagnoses. Continuous monitoring and 24-hour nursing and medical monitoring is available to provide meticulous care.

  • Fluid, Electrolyte, and Vitamin Replacement – Intravenous fluid, electrolyte, vitamin and mineral replacement is available when indicated.

Addiction is a Disease –Substance use disorders (SUD) are disease states of the mind and body. Most often, the hallmark manifestations of substance use disorders and addiciton are behaviors and symptoms conistent with an inability to control what happens after the individual introduces the offending substance(s) into his or her body. Family, friends, spouses or significant others usually notice these episodes first, as they may begin subtly or inconsistently. But over time SUD is most often progressive and eventually fatal in its devastation.

Dignity – We find it unfortunate that stigma related to alcohol and other substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions persists in this day and age. While our nation has evolved into one of inclusion and brotherhood, the divide between an understanding of the disease of addiction and the misguided belief that sufferers are inherently bad people or individuals who've succumbed to a moral failure. Sure addicts and alcoholics can meet either of these descriptions, but so can others who never misuse mind-altering substances. At Serenity Grove, we understand. In fact, many of our team members have either experienced the disease firsthand as a person in recovery themselves, or as a family member or friend of someone who has been in active addiciton or alcoholism. If you think aboout it, with 30 to 40 million Americans facing a current, past, or future problem with substances, it is little wonder that nearly every one of us has had an experience with this epidemic.

Advocacy – Our clinical team is a multi-disciplinary powerhouse of experienced, and appropriately trained professionals, which includes certified and licensed therapists and counselors. In additon to their empathic and dedicated caregiving, these clinicians also support our clients as advocates. They will stand in the gap for you between an employer, family member, court or other juducial authority and accurately report your status and the degree to which you have been working to arrest your disease and overcome your active disease state. Our team is no stranger to advocating for clients who are in tight spots and difficult consequences as a result of fulminant addictive disease, but who are working hard to get their lives back on track, and creating a workable plan to stay that way. We can be there for you, too.

Only the Beginning – Consistent with our experience, as well as plentiful evidence-based outcomes, prolonged abstinence resulting from detox alone is exceedingly rare. Our professional recommendations will always include some form of counseling, treatment, and accountability in addition to detox and for no other reason than it is simply the standard of care. Success with a combination of detox, medications (only when necessary) for co-occurring disorders, and appropriate counseling on a case-to-case basis is exponentially more effective. Our team has a diverse array of therapists with different clinical specialties; however, if we don't have the proper therapist(s) or treatments for an individual, we are able to help obtain care with a referred and more appropriate facility or caregiver.

FAQ - Withdrawal Management & Detoxification

Will my loved one be restrained?

It is against the policies of Serenity Grove to physically restrain any client. To that end, we will use chemical restraint, when it is possible and appropriate, if a client is unable to consciously comply with our staff in an effort to prevent harm or injury to themselves or others. In the event we are unable to perform chemical restraint, we will seek the assistance of the appropriate agency or authorities for the health and safety of the person served and others.

How long is detox?

There are two phases of most withdrawal management plans, the induction phase and the tapering phase. The induction phase of outpatient detox is relatively short, usually one or two days, followed by a 3 to 7 day tapering phase in most instances. When co-occurring disorders are present and in cases of detox from multiple drugs, both phases may be longer. With residential or inpatient withdrawal management care, the lengths of times for each phase and the overall circumstance will vary significantly. The care team will perform a comprehensive assessement from all available data, make their best estimate of the plan, explain risks and benefits, and an estimated length of stay before an admission takes place. The financial department staff will work closely with the family or other responsible party to obtain as concise an estimate as possible regarding the financial aspects of the admission.
